Assessing Credibility
Who should you believe? This course is for anyone who has investigated allegations but struggled to make a finding. Learn about the science of lie detection, which approaches work and which don’t, and valuable tools to assist you in making decisions. Investigators will leave confident in making difficult credibility decisions. Participants will be provided with comprehensive materials explaining these concepts and tools to better support them in their investigative practice.
July first marks the one year countdown to our country’s 150th birthday. To celebrate this milestone, our lawyers will be writing a special blog on the first of each month for the next year. The blog will have no more than 150 words (#150words) from a case, or a legal document, or just something about our remarkable country that we as employment and workplace human rights lawyers think is important and should be celebrated.
I have chosen the words of Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada. In 2009, she spoke about her work conducting the Royal Commission on Equality in Employment in 1983/84. Justice Abella’s report became the foundation of post-Charter equality rights in this country. To me, her beautiful words are about listening deeply with an open heart and an open mind:
“My opinions changed and I learned how to listen in a different way. Each of us is limited by what others don’t know. With knowledge comes understanding, with understanding comes wisdom and with wisdom comes justice. And to have justice, we must never forget how the world looks to those who are vulnerable. It was an incredible honour for me to have had the opportunity to work on the Report. But I will never forget the people who taught me to see the world through their eyes.” Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella 2009*
