Dorian N. Persaud,

B.Comm, MTS, LL.B., Associate

Photo of Toronto employment lawyer Dorian PersaudToronto employment lawyer Dorian Persaud took a path less travelled by – a business degree, work in wealth management and government and a Masters in Theology – en route to employment law. And that, as they say, has made all the difference.

Working as a financial analyst right out of university, Dorian wasn’t in the workplace very long before he realized that he needed to find something he was passionate about, and that led him to an interest in advocacy. A position with the Ontario Government’s Management Board Secretariat helped him hone his skills as he advocated for various ministries seeking expenditure approval from Cabinet. While working in government, Dorian enrolled in theological studies, aiming to gain a better understanding of different cultures and religious beliefs that would give him additional insights to human behaviour and conflict resolution.

It was then that he heard the calling of employment law. With a clear and compelling vision of how he wanted to spend the rest of his career, Dorian returned to school to study law at Osgoode Hall. By the time he was called to the Bar in July 2006, he had gained a more global perspective through international experience in labour and employment law. In India, he worked to eliminate child labour and help develop a self-sustaining workforce for the Rural Institute for Development and Education, a Non Governmental Organization. He also spent a summer in England, the birthplace of the common law, gaining experience in the British justice system through a post with the Barristers of 39 Essex.

Prior to joining Rubin Thomlinson, Dorian spent three years with a labour and employment law firm in Northern Ontario. He was actively involved in arbitrations, collective bargaining and negotiating with unions over issues such as pay equity. He provided counsel on the restructuring of private and public sector companies, and worked extensively with First Nations organizations providing counsel on wrongful dismissals and conducting an intensive workplace investigation. He also contributed to some compelling human rights cases, such as the defense of a university against allegations of age discrimination in its hiring process.

In his role at Rubin Thomlinson, Dorian provides counsel to employers and employees on all areas of employment law, including employment contracts, wrongful dismissals, workplace policies, employment standards, workplace investigations and human rights in the workplace.

Dorian has written and published a number of articles on employment and human rights law, including “Managing Workplace Relationships”, “Harassment in the Workplace” “Accommodating Disabled Employees”, and “Terminating an Employee After a Prolonged Absence”.
