Janice Rubin, B.A.,

LL.B., Partner

Janice Rubin has that rare ability to cut right through the complexity.  She can clearly see the essential kernel of an issue while most are still peeling away at the husks.

Some would say it’s a gift.  Others would attribute it to her exceptional intellect, astute judgment, strategic thinking and superb communication skills.

Janice credits it largely to her nearly 20 years of depth and breadth of experience in employment law. She’s long been fascinated by what happens to people when they go to work.  It’s more than just an occupation to her.  She’s passionate about making the workplace function better, for employers and employees, and has made this her vocation.

As both managing partner and senior counsel at Rubin Thomlinson, Janice provides trusted, expert legal counsel to employer and employee clients.  She listens very carefully to the clients and their circumstances.  She then discerns the essential issues, interprets the law, assesses all the ramifications, and determines the most expedient, cost-effective and often innovative solution to the client’s issue.

Like all of her team members at Rubin Thomlinson, Janice’s approach to helping solve a client’s legal problems is a pragmatic one.  To her extensive experience and expertise, she adds other critical elements, such as incisive and strategic thinking, creativity, expert judgment and a good dose of common sense.  The result is a uniquely blended, practical solution to the client’s problem.

This same pragmatic approach applies to the other services that Janice provides.  She is certified in both mediation and workplace investigation, work for which she is widely renowned.  Here again, her ability to distill the complex into its simple essence is a valuable asset to her clients, as are her superior listening and speaking skills.  In 2007, Janice, together with partner Christine Thomlinson, co-authored the seminal, “Human Resources Guide to Workplace Investigations”.  Together, through their book, training, and workplace investigation services, they have been instrumental in advancing best practices in workplace investigations across the country.

Janice’s devotion to excellence has earned her a stellar reputation in employment law.  Ever since “Canada’s Best Lawyers” entered the Canadian marketplace three years ago, her legal peers and the public voted her worthy of being included, an honour that is considered the highest form of accolade in the legal profession. Janice was also honoured to be included in the “Canadian Who’s Who 2010”, the directory of the leading and most influential Canadians.

She is a masterful communicator.  As a public speaker, Janice stands out as a dynamic, polished professional, capable of holding the interest and attention of any audience, big or small.  Her ability to speak concisely and compellingly while sharing her expert insights also makes her highly effective in media interviews, and she is frequently asked to comment on employment law issues for print, radio and television media across the country.

Janice is committed to volunteerism, and to making a difference in her community. She actively supports a number of important causes, and is currently Chair of The Canadian Women’s Foundation initiative, “Women Moving Women”, a national movement created to change the face of poverty in Canada by raising funds that will transform the lives of 2500 women by moving them out of poverty.

A graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School, Janice was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1991.  She graduated from Harvard University’s Advanced Negotiation Skills program in 1997.  Committed to learning, she continues to advance her knowledge, staying up-to-date on all areas of employment law.  Believing it is important to contribute to her profession, she teaches a variety of educational programs for lawyers and human resources professionals, and has taught courses in employment law at Osgoode Hall.
