Toronto Employment Lawyer Sarah Vokey brings an innate passion and drive to her work that cannot be taught. Sarah comes to employment law as a second career and brings with her all of the experiences gained in her first one. Sarah discovered her passion for helping people navigate challenging situations during difficult times in their lives while working at the Canadian Cancer Society. She spent two years managing emotional support programs for cancer patients and their families as well as developing and implementing cancer prevention programs on a province-wide basis.

It was Sarah’s position with a tobacco reduction organization, where she was part of the movement towards smoke-free public places, that showed her the impact that the law can have on business interests as well as on an individual’s quality of life. She realized that her creative problem-solving skills and quick, sound judgment could be used to help both organizations and people overcome difficult problems using the law.

While at law school, Sarah was seconded to the Ontario Human Rights Commission where she discovered her affinity for human rights law. Her experience working in a Mediation Clinic reinforced her belief that alternative dispute resolution is a powerful tool through which to resolve conflict. Very early in her legal career, Sarah was exposed to employment law and knew she had found her calling. As the one place where people spend most of their lives, she understood the dynamic impact of the workplace on quality of life. Here is where Sarah found the opportunity to do work that embodied all of her career passions – helping others navigate and overcome challenging problems, advocating for human rights, and resolving conflict through alternative dispute resolutions as well as through the courts. Sarah brings a calm, thoughtful and results-oriented approach to complex legal problems, while always considering the overall business strategies and needs of the organization and the values of the people involved.

As a valued member of the Rubin Thomlinson team, Sarah supports both employee and employer clients with legal counsel in all areas of employment law. She describes her work, and the clients she works with, as a privilege. She recently assisted with updating the third edition of For Better or For Worse: A Practical Guide to Canadian Employment Law authored by Justice Randall Scott Echlin and Christine Thomlinson.

Sarah studied at the University of Windsor, and was called to the Bar in June 2009. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology from Queen’s University.
